The following are job leads that were sent to me to share with each of you. I have no relationship/affiliation with any of these companies. If you are interested in any of the positions please contact the person listed on the job or apply online. As I mention in my articles, your highest chance of success with any of these positions is to network your way into these companies and talk to the person responsible for doing the hiring. That is the most important step in the process even if it means cold calling.

If you would like to be added to the distribution list for either the articles or the job leads, send me an email with “ADD ME TO YOUR DISTRIBUTION LIST” as the subject line.

Is your resume getting lost in the black hole? Are you networking but not seeing any results? In my 15 years of experience recruiting for both Fortune 500 Companies as well as executive search firms, I have reviewed over 40,000 resumes, conducted 5000+ interviews, and negotiated over 700 offers. My name is Steve Gray with Career Search Strategies, ask me how to put that experience to work for you by helping you develop a plan to jump start your job search.
Thanks,

Thanks,

I have recently interacted with large groups of unemployed people at various events. Their networking activities typically involve talking to other unemployed people and they are afraid to make direct contact with companies and call people they don’t know. I am going to say this as plainly as possible; if the above describes your job search you will be unemployed through at least the end of this year. The economy has undergone dramatic changes and your job search tactics need to keep up or you will get left behind.

Talk to your target market – You need to spend 75%+ of your time speaking with those people that can either hire you or refer you to someone that can hire you. I speak to many job seekers that are afraid to call people they don’t know for fear of what may happen. It is time for you to realize that you are unemployed and you need to do what it takes to find that next role whether you like it or not. If you are not aggressively pursuing a position, you can be sure that someone else is and they will get the job.

Get others working for you – By networking effectively, you will gather a great deal of information about what companies are doing and what positions they are hiring for. Develop a list of 10-20 people you trust that are also searching for their next job. Share with them all of the information that is not of direct use to you in your job search. The more information you push out to others, the greater return you will get back from them. Experience tells me you will get two times as much information back as you give out.

Accomplishment-oriented resume – The most common mistake I find on resumes is they are very task-oriented and tell me nothing of what results or accomplishments were actually produced. If all you give me are the tasks you performed, I have no idea if you did them well or you were horrible at your job. By showing me results and accomplishments, I am more likely to read your resume and give you a call.

The resume is merely the starting point – I frequently come in contact with prospective clients that think their resume is the reason they are not getting hired. In many instances this is not the case, simply because their resume was never even read. Companies are so inundated with applicants that they opt instead for those candidates that come from referrals or are a known commodity. I strongly encourage candidates to have a great resume, but if that is where you stop you will not get the job you are seeking.

Statistics back it up – Recent statistics I have read say that 50% of all open jobs are never posted online and that up to 70% of all openings are filled by networking. A current client just received three offers for positions that were never posted on any job board. All of the interviews were the result of my client talking to hiring managers located through LinkedIn or other sources and sharing his elevator speech. I can almost guarantee your job search will be a failure if you are not talking to your target market.

What’s in it for me – Why should I want to speak with you? What can you do for me? What a hiring manager or recruiter cares most about is how you can help solve their companies’ problem. You want your answers to be succinct and to the point (For those of you that ramble on that means 2 minutes maximum). If your answer is longer, chances are you are giving non value added information relative to the question asked.

With the unemployment rate at 12+% you have to be more aggressive than ever before when it comes to your job search. I frankly do not care if you hate the idea of calling someone you have never met before. You have a choice, stay unemployed or step outside your comfort zone and start talking to people. You make the call!

Thanks,

The interview process is filled with obstacles that will prevent even the most qualified candidate from getting the job. I am going to discuss what I consider to be the most common mistakes based on 5000+ phone and face to face interviews that I have conducted over the years.

Research – Never go into an interview or conversation without previously having done some research on the individual and the company you are speaking with. That could be as simple as looking at their LinkedIn profile or doing a Google search. Use that research to help develop five strong questions that convey your knowledge of your profession while also providing you with valuable insight to how the company operates and issues that they are currently experiencing.

Proper Attire and Hygiene – I am speaking to all of the cologne and perfume wearers (yes, that means you). Put the bottle down so as to not offend the rest of us. It is difficult if not impossible for you to wear a minimal amount such that you do not leave a trail all over the office. A shower the day of the interview and deodorant should be sufficient. As for the dress code, I always encourage men to wear a suit and tie and women to wear the equivalent unless told otherwise.

Do Not be Late – I don’t care if your dog ate your resume, always be 10-15 minutes early for the interview. By arriving late you have already formed a first impression that will not be easy to change. That means prepare everything you need the night before, review your route, and be aware of any construction delays. If you have to be late, call ahead and let them know your status.

The Overly Anxious, Wanderers, and the Dead Fish – During an interview always greet each new person you meet with a firm palm to palm handshake that lasts approximately 2-3 seconds. Nobody wants to hold onto the limp hand that feels like a dead fish or endure the half handshake where just fingers touch. During the interview always maintain eye contact with the person to whom you are speaking. That does not mean you should stare at them, but make sure your eyes are not wandering around the room. Finally, when someone is speaking let them completely finish what they are saying before jumping in with your response.

Answering Questions – Behavioral based interview questions, those that start with ‘tell me about a time when’, focus on past performance as the best indicator of future performance. Start your answer by framing the overall context and scope and then quickly get into your specific accomplishments. Use ‘We’ sparingly and focus on the use of ‘I’ in your answers. The company is hiring you not your entire team. In order to make sure you hit all of the relevant points in your response, use the STAR Method

Situation- A high level overview of the project

Task – What you were responsible for

Action- What you specifically did to solve the problem

Result- Quantifiable results that you produced

Keep the Comments Professional – Regardless of how much you may not have liked your previous employer or boss, avoid any negative comments. Nobody wants to be associated with negative people. Derogatory comments make you sound like a complainer and give the perspective that you will act the same way when you leave your next company.

Money and Benefits – We all want to know what the job pays and whether the prospective employer has good benefits. Hold all of those questions until they make you an offer, unless they broach the topic first. If the company does ask your current or expected salary, it is ok to ask the salary range for the job. When answering what your expected range is, make sure you have done the research to know the average pay for that job in your geographic region. Don’t start negotiating salary until they make an offer; that is when you have the greatest leverage.

The Close – At the end of each interview succinctly express your interest in the role and why you feel it is a good fit with your experience. Companies want to hire those people that are eager and express a strong desire to work for them. This is your chance to ask if the interviewer has any additional questions or concerns about how you would fit in this role and respond to those questions or concerns accordingly.

As I mentioned, there are many things that you as a candidate can do to turn-off a prospective employer. The above mentioned are merely a highlight reel from my experiences over the past 15 years. If you need additional counseling or advice on how to handle interviews in more detail, please feel free to contact me via the information below.

Thanks and best of luck with your career search!

Thanks,

The following are job leads that were sent to me to share with each of you. I have no relationship/affiliation with any of these companies. If you are interested in any of the positions please contact the person listed on the job or apply online. As I mention in my articles, your highest chance of success with any of these positions is to network your way into these companies and talk to the person responsible for doing the hiring. That is the most important step in the process even if it means cold calling.

If you would like to be added to the distribution list for either the articles or the job leads, send me an email with “ADD ME TO YOUR DISTRIBUTION LIST” as the subject line.

Networking is defined as a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest. Why should you network? Studies have shown that 50% of all job openings are never posted anywhere online and upwards of 70% of all openings are filled by networking. Now that I have your attention, let’s look at how to avoid the common networking errors.

Job Boards Don’t Work – Using Monster, CareerBuilder and the other major job boards is a waste of your time if all you do is apply online. Applying is the first step but must be followed up by calling into a company and finding out who the hiring manager is for the role. You need to get them on the phone to present them with your 30 second or elevator speech. Recent statistics I have heard are that 2-5% of the people that apply via the major job boards get a call. That means 95% of you are wasting your time if all you do is apply online.

Networking Is NOT About Asking For A Job – The most common mistake people make is to come across as desperate by asking for a job.  The odds are slim that any one person you speak with is looking to hire.  By being perceived as desperate you are going to make them uncomfortable and they will quickly end the conversation.   So what questions do you ask;

Who do you know in the area that is well-connected?

What companies have you heard of that are growing?

What companies have you heard about that are having problems (Jobs exist because companies need to solve problems)?

Who do you know at the following five companies on my target list?

The Unemployed Won’t Hire You – Your ideal networking targets are those people that are currently employed in a role similar to that which you are seeking and can either hire you or influence the hiring decision. That doesn’t mean you don’t talk to others, but it does mean this is where you focus your time. If you make 10-15 of these types of calls per week consistently, the activity level of your job search will increase significantly.

Let Me Know If You Hear of Any Job Openings – This is just about the most worthless thing you can say unless you back it up with detail.  The people in your network want to help you, but you have to give them focus and detail regarding the specific types of roles you are seeking.  Otherwise they feel powerless to help and will either send you job leads for a cashier at Kmart or nothing at all.  Examples of what to share include the following;

What size and type of companies or industries you are targeting

Names of the top companies on your target list

Geographical preferences

Types of roles you are seeking

You Can’t Call The Hiring Manager – The job of HR is to screen you out because they are looking at literally hundreds of resumes. A hiring manager has one thing on their mind: getting the job filled as quickly as possible. As a result, they are more likely to screen you in. Take advantage of that by giving them your elevator speech and remember to make sure it is all about them and how you can help solve their problems.

One Conversation Is Never Enough – When it comes to networking you have to continually follow up with people on a monthly basis in order to stay in tough, keep them apprised of your progress, and how they can help. Make your requests succinct and easy for them to think about quickly. The continual follow up will keep you in the forefront of their mind as leads and opportunities arise.

Don’t Be Selfish – Good networkers know that it is a give-and-take process and they are always looking for ways to help others. The more information you push out to other people in your network, the more you will get in return. Here are some great information-sharing ideas:

Pass along job leads that are not a fit for you

Ask, “How can I help you” of your contacts and share appropriate information

Share relevant industry or skill-specific articles

It should be all about the reward – Many people hate the thought of making networking calls so they just don’t do it. One way to change that is to set a daily and weekly goal with a reward if you reach your target. For example, if you have three networking conversations today you get a bowl of ice cream or if you get fifteen conversations for the week you get to take a day off. By taking the focus off the calls and putting it on the reward, you are more likely to succeed.

Thank you for reading. Please share the article with others if you found the information helpful. Always remember, networking is the number one key to success in your job search. You may not like the thought of calling people and talking about yourself, but it sure beats being unemployed! For more job search related articles check out the blog. Best of luck with your job search.
